Spicy Spanish Mackerel Fry

Fried fish in India is one of the most basic home recipes in fish -eating communities. This dish is loved by many people. there is nothing not to love about this spicy, flavorful fried fish cooked with a few ingredients,  It is  a great appetizer with salad or a  quick fix light  meal, it makes a delicious side dish for a weeknight dinner on the bed of rice and dal soup. The possibilities are endless! Such a delight to the palate for both Adults and Kids.

Prep Time: 5 mins + 30 minutes marination

Cook time: 6-7mins to fry each batch


  • 600 gm mackerel (3-4 pieces fresh and cleaned)
  • 2 tbsp. ginger garlic paste
  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp kashmiri red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp hot chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsp cumin powder
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 4 Tbsp. Oil for frying
  • Salt to taste


  1. In a mixing bowl add ginger garlic paste, lemon juice, all ground spices, salt and few spoon of water to make the marinate.
  2. Add fish pieces to the mixing bowl and apply the marinate to the pieces, cover with a wrap and keep aside for at least half an hour.
  3. Heat oil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low, place 2 fish pieces on the pan, bring the temperature to medium and cook each side for 3 to 4 minutes ( depending on the thickness of the fish cutlets), flip the other side with the help of a spatula or Tongs, cook another 2 to 3 minutes or until they are done. 
  4. Remove from oil and place them on a paper lined plate and enjoy!!
