Bengali spicy fish batter fry

Spicy fish batter fry



  • 3-4 pcs Hilsha Fish cut into pieces
  • 2 tsp Yellow mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp black mustard seeds
  • 2 green chillies (1 chopped, add more if you want)
  • 3 tsp mustard oil
  • 2 tbsp. beaten plain curd
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt  and sugar to taste


  1. Soak both type of mustard seeds into warm water for about 15 minutes or so.
  2. Add salt, one green chilli, with the help of a blender or mortar pestle make a paste.
  3. Into a non-stick cooking pot add this paste, beaten curd, half of mustard oil, salt and sugar, with a help of a spoon mix well.
  4.  Add fish pieces into the marinade, coat all side really well, cover with lid and let it sit for 15 minutes.
  5. Set the pan over high heat, once everything starts simmering, bring the temperature into medium to low, add remaining oil, chopped green chilli.
  6. Turn the other side, put lid on and cook for further 5 to 10 minutes, or until fish is cooked through.
  7. Turn off the heat, give ten minutes standing time.

Enjoy with steamed Basmati rice.
