Bengali Spicy Fish Batter Fries


  • 500 gm any kind of white fish fillet
  • For marinade:
    • ½  tsp crushed red chilli
    • 1 tsp cumin powder
    • 1 tsp coriander powder
    • 1-2 tsp lime/ lemon  juice
    • 2  chopped green  chillies
    • 1 ½ tsp ginger-garlic paste
    • 1 tsp onion paste
  • For batter:
    • 1 cup plain flour
    • ½ tsp baking powder
    • ½ tsp onion paste
    • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
    • 1 tsp melted butter
    • Salt and pepper
    • 1 egg
  • Oil for deep frying


  1. In a mixing bowl add fish and all ingredients for marination, add salt, mix well.
  2. Transfer the marinated fish into another bowl, cover with plastic wrap or plate and put into the refrigerator for at least one hour.
  3. In a heavy duty pan heat vegetable or canola oil over medium heat for deep frying.
  4. Into the same mixing bowl add plain flour, baking powder, melted butter, onion paste, ginger-garlic paste and mix well.
  5. Add beaten egg, salt, pepper and water little by little, by using a fork or beater whisk together all ingredients to get a semi thick but pourable consistency batter.
  6. Take one piece of fish dip into the batter, drop it  in the hot oil cook about 4 to 5 at a time to  avoid the overcrowding the pot.
  7. Cook the fishes until they develop golden brown color (for about 4 to 5 minutes). Drain them on paper towels, place them on a serving plate and serve hot with your favorite ketchup.
