Aloo Chingrir Jhal (Potato Prawn Curry)

Serves: 2 to 3

Ingredients :

  • 2 medium size Potatoes
  • 20 pieces of medium size Prawns
  • 1 medium size Onion( chopped/sliced)
  • 11/2 tsp Ginger paste
  • 11/2 Tbsp chopped tomato
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Mustard Oil
  • Salt to taste

for Tempering:

  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Hot red chili powder( according to taste)
  • 1/2 Tsp Turmeric powder
  • 4 Green Cardamom
  • 1 Tiny Cinnamon stick
  • 2 Small Bay leaves


  1. Add Ginger paste and all spice powder,to a small bowl add little bit of water, make a paste, let it sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add Oil in a cooking pot and  preheat it over high heat,reduced the heat to medium add cubed  potatoes and cook for few minutes or until cooked through, add little bit salt also.
  3. When potatoes almost cooked add Prawns and cook for few minutes, remove from oil.
  4. Add Tempering into the same oil and cook for few seconds to bring aroma from whole spices.
  5. Then add sliced Onion, chopped tomatoes and cook for 5 minutes, or until onion turns into golden color, add spice paste, salt and allow to cook for 7 minutes or until oil releasing from gravy.
  6. Add back fried potato and prawn to gravy, give a good mix and cook for about 3 - 4 minutes.
  7. Add 1 ½ cup water, increase heat to high, allow water to boil, reduce heat to medium-low cook for 3 minutes, until gravy/ sauce has thickened.

If wish sprinkle  Garam masala powder and Ghee, before serve give 5 minutes standing time, enjoy it with steamed rice.
