Mixed Dal

Serves : 3-4
Prep Time: 2 hour soaking time,if cook in open pot otherwise 30 minutes is okay
Cook Time: 15 minutes to 20 minutes


  • 1 Tbsp. Dhuli Urad Dal ( Black gram skinned Lentils)
  • 1 Tbsp. Chana Dal (Bengal gram split and skinned lentils)
  • 1 Tbsp. Toor Dal ( Pigeon Peas Split and skinned lentils)
  • 1 Tbsp. Moong Dal ( Green gram split lentils)
  • 1 Tbsp. Masoor Dal (Pink Lentils)

For Seasoning:

  • 1 small onion(1 cup chopped)
  • 1 cup chopped Tomatoes
  • Handful Chopped Cilantro
  • 1 tsp Ginger paste
  • 1 tsp Garlic paste
  • 3 to 4 Green Chilies
  • 1 tsp cumin coriander powder
  • ½ tsp Turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp Garam masala powder
  • Salt and Sugar  to taste

For Tempering:

  • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1/4 tsp black mustard seeds
  • 2 Green cardamom
  • 2 -3 Cloves
  • Tiny stick of Cinnamon
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • 1 dry red Chili
  • ¼ tsp Asafoetida

Ghee before serving


  1. In a bowl, mix all lentils, wash and rinse for 2-3 times and soak into water for at least 30 minutes.
  2. In a bowl add all ground spices and little amount of water to make a paste; keep it side.
  3. Add soaked Lentils in a Pressure cooker, add Salt and Turmeric. Put the lid on and wait for 2-3 whistles.
  4. After 2-3 whistles turn off the heat and wait until pressure release all by itself.
  5. In a cooking pan, heat Oil, over medium heat.
  6. Add all tempering one by one.
  7. Add Onion, Ginger, Garlic, Tomatoes and cook for few minutes; also season with little bit salt add the mixed spice paste. Continue cooking until oil release from mixture.
  8. Add cooked Dal, coriander leaves and green chilies into the mixture; mix well with spatula or ladle.
  9. Add  ground Garam masala, cover with lid partially and cook for few minutes.(about 3-4 minutes)
  10. Add Ghee or lime juice on the top before Serve,

Enjoy with hot Steamed Basmati Rice or Roti.
