Masala Dalia - recipe by Foodie's Hut

Masala Dalia

Savoury broken wheat

Masala Dalia or Savoury broken wheat is an appreciable Breakfast choice and you know what, making it could not get much simpler either!

Though I have a big sweet tooth, but when it comes to breakfast I don't like to eat anything sweet in the morning. I love my savory hot Breakfast. Like this masala Dalia, Chirer pulao, Bread pulao, Paratha.

I often serve the dish as a savory breakfast with yogurt or as a side with my protein, like grilled chicken salad, spicy fish fry.
Sometimes I like it to substitute for my regular rice and served with curry.

If you don't like to eat Dalia then you can make the dish with Semolina or oats. But I would suggest you try the recipe with Dalia. Here is how I make my Masala Dalia, I am waiting to get your feedback.

If you love the dish or any other dishes from this website, please take a picture and share on any of my social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) using #foodieshut.

Serves: 2-3

  • 1 cup fine Dalia or broken wheat
  • 1  cup water
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp Ghee
  • 10-12 finely chopped mint leaves
  • ¼ cup chopped coriander leaves
  • 2 tsp grated ginger
  • 2-3 chopped green chilies
  • ½ of lemon juice
  • ¼ tsp Sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • For spice blend,
  • 2 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • 5 cloves
  • ¼ stick of Cinnamon

  1. Cook the Dalia,
    • In Pressure cooker: Wash the Dalia for a couple of times, then transfer it to the pressure cooker, add water, sprinkle salt and put the lid on, cook it over high heat and wait for 2-3 whistles, turn off the heat.
    • In Saucepan: Wash and soak the Dalia in the water at least for 30 minutes. Then transfer to the saucepan, add double amount of water, sprinkle salt, then set it over high heat. When the liquid comes to a boil, reduce the heat to medium-low and let cook until it’s done.
  2. Preheat a skillet or Tawa over medium high heat, add dry red chilies and spices, stir and toss occasionally, until they begin to smell toasty and fragrant. Transfer them to a bowl, let them cool and grind with a help of mortar and pestle.
  3. Add oil in a preheated pan, add ghee and let it melt, sprinkle salt, then add grated ginger, ground roasted spices, chopped herbs, lemon juice, sugar, give a quick stir and add cooked Dalia.
  4. Over high heat cook for a couple of minutes, maybe 3-4 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and enjoy!
